Much of how a battery performs, and how it fails, is decided at the interfaces between its materials. In this invited talk, Piero Canepa shows how first-principles calculations can screen these interfaces, from protective coatings on metal anodes to the reactions of electrolytes with electrodes, and what they tell us about designing them.
