Mission and values
Our mission
We use and develop computational materials science methods to answer pressing questions in materials science and chemistry, with a direct impact on society.
- We do new science on problems that matter in materials science and chemistry.
- We write code when the tools we need do not exist, and share it openly on our Software page.
- We use computational materials science carefully, aware of what its methods can and cannot do.
- We keep those limits in mind when we interpret experiments. Our aim is to understand a material, not to reproduce experimental data at any cost.
Our values
Three values guide how we do science and how we treat each other.
1. Integrity
- We welcome everyone and treat everyone equally, whatever their ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality or background.
- We are honest and fair with group members, collaborators and competitors alike.
- We do not tolerate plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of results.
2. Excellence
- We hold our science to a high standard.
- We help every member grow into a scientist with strong analytical, technical and communication skills.
3. Teamwork
- We believe that teamwork is the key to great science.
- We share and discuss ideas freely, and give credit for them.
- We seek out collaborations, within the group and beyond it.
- We contribute actively to the materials science and chemistry communities.
How we work
A few habits keep the group working well.
- Ideas matter more than seniority. A good idea from a first-year student deserves the same hearing as one from a senior researcher.
- Talk directly. The people doing the work talk to each other, without going through anyone else.
- Take ownership. Do what you can yourself, so that things move quickly.
- Keep it simple. No more process than the work needs.
