Our review “Fundamentals of inorganic solid-state electrolytes for batteries” is out in Nature Materials. Written with Theodosios Famprikis, James Dawson, Saiful Islam and Christian Masquelier, of the University of Bath (United Kingdom) and LRCS in Amiens (France), it describes what is known about the inorganic solid electrolytes at the heart of solid-state batteries: how ions move through them across length scales, their electrochemical and mechanical properties, and how they are processed.

The review also sets out the main challenges that remain before solid-state batteries become practical: using metal anodes, stabilizing the interfaces between electrolyte and electrodes, and keeping them in physical contact as the battery cycles.
